Disasters in Cake Decorating

“A cake is a very good test of an oven: if it browns too much on one side and not on the other, it’s not your fault – you need to have your oven checked.” – Delia Smith

I wish I could say this week’s cake decorating class went well, but, it was a complete disaster. First off, I had to bake a cake. Honestly, I did not think this would be as hard as it was. Somewhere, though, in my baking process, I seemed to have messed up. Thus, when I got to class and it was time to cut my cake into two layers, my cake was not properly cooked in the middle. This made constructing a layer cake very hard and frosting it nearly impossible. Luckily, Alexis, my assistant had a properly baked cake, so I was able to help her frost and decorate her cake. But, let it be known, it is extremely difficult for two people to decorate an eight inch cake at the same time because there isn’t a lot of room for the both of you. There is a lesson here though: follow the directions precisely and always have a bakery on speed dial. Needless to say, next week’s class will be better: I can buy the cupcakes that I will be decorating.
