Brunch, Billiards and Best Friends

“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

Jas and I in Athens, Greece in October 2008

Yesterday Jason celebrated his 30th Birthday. For weeks I had been pestering him with questions about this big day. Was he was looking forward to turning 20-10, was he content with where his life was, would he do anything different…? His responses were levelheaded and reasonable, although this should have been no surprise to me since he has always been so sensible. I am fortunate to have him by my side.

He and I are both blessed to have a few great friends who planned a small, intimate birthday celebration for a milestone that Jason gracefully embraced. My best friend planned the whole day starting with a fabulous Saturday morning brunch that she prepared with new born baby in tow (yes, she’s a rock star). Since the weather was less than perfect, golfing turned into billiards for the boys and Surekha and I spent the day and evening lounging about with baby Charlie. The evening ended at 1am with homemade vegan chili and 3 guys sleeping in the living room. Boys will always be boys, regardless of how old they get.

April Showers

This past week has been super dreary. I like rainy days because it means that I can curl up by the fireplace with a cup of tea and an old book and because I get a lot of work done in the office. However, for some reason, this week I have been in desperate need of a little sunshine, fresh air and a long walk. Unfortunately, I was 0 for 3. Thankfully, there was a little glimmer of sunshine radiating my way from my weekly blooms.

Easter Extravaganza

Grand Rapids Wedding Planner

I hosted my first Easter Dinner last week. Actually, it was my first time hosting any Holiday Dinner for my family. For anyone that knows me, this is actually a big deal for me. Yes, I can plan weddings and host events, but hosting a dinner is quite different: it involves cooking. I am not a chef. I am not a cook. And I can barely bake to boot. Ironic, because for someone who loves to eat, cooking has never been my strong suit.

However, if I didn’t host Easter for my family, there wasn’t going to be a family celebration. So, I bit the bullet and figured it was the celebration and not the food that mattered. After a few frantic days of trying to find recipes that I felt I could cook and sending out emails to my small extended family on my mom’s side and a close family friend, Easter came, I survived, and fell asleep sewing at the late hour of 6pm.

A Quite Contrary Baby

Grand Rapids Wedding Planner

Last week Wednesday my friend Surekha (of Quite Contrary) and her husband Tyson had their baby boy. The next day Jas and I made our way to the hospital for our meet and greet; this was my first time around a new born so I was a little apprehensive. Charlie came a little earlier than expected, about a month early actually, but when we got there he was doing great and Surekha was stunning. While I did not hold the baby, I did do my Auntly duties and oohed and ahhed appropriately. But with Surekha just having her baby, it meant that I was without my usually weekly blooms. So instead, I made my way out to her house with some pretty blooms to brighten her day.
