Baking Makes Life Sweeter

“You are the icing to my cake.”  – Anonymous

I have finished my last class of cake decorating and I have a certificate to prove it. My last class was more difficult. We learned how to make a different type of rose as well as write words. Needless to say, my roses were not perfect the first few time. According to our instructor, it will take practice to perfect this particular rose. Then, our final project was to decorate our cake that we brought in (yes, another cake). My final cake does not look extremely complicated, but given the insane heat we have been having in Grand Rapids, there were times I thought the whole thing would melt. I am happy to say that I have successfully complete my first cake decorating class in one piece.

Keep Calm and Have A Cupcake

“You’re the frosting to my cupcake.” – UnknownThe third week of my cake decorating class went better. Much better. It does help having an item to decorate, unlike last week. This week we learned how to make leaves, small flowers, roses, a shaggy mum and a star flower. By far the coolest flower we made was the shaggy mum. All you need to do is give it a couple of eyes and it looks like a creature right out of Sesame Street. After class, I was so proud of my creations that a friend and I went on a photo shoot with them. Finding green grass in Grand Rapids proved to be tougher than we imagined though.

Disasters in Cake Decorating

“A cake is a very good test of an oven: if it browns too much on one side and not on the other, it’s not your fault – you need to have your oven checked.” – Delia Smith

I wish I could say this week’s cake decorating class went well, but, it was a complete disaster. First off, I had to bake a cake. Honestly, I did not think this would be as hard as it was. Somewhere, though, in my baking process, I seemed to have messed up. Thus, when I got to class and it was time to cut my cake into two layers, my cake was not properly cooked in the middle. This made constructing a layer cake very hard and frosting it nearly impossible. Luckily, Alexis, my assistant had a properly baked cake, so I was able to help her frost and decorate her cake. But, let it be known, it is extremely difficult for two people to decorate an eight inch cake at the same time because there isn’t a lot of room for the both of you. There is a lesson here though: follow the directions precisely and always have a bakery on speed dial. Needless to say, next week’s class will be better: I can buy the cupcakes that I will be decorating.

Let Them Eat Cake

“A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand.” – Unknown

An even more balanced diet is a frosted cookie in each hand. Just for fun, and because I like learning new skills, Alexis and I are taking a four week cake decorating class. I have learned that as a Grand Rapids Event Planner, it’s important to know about every aspect of a wedding. Plus, I have wanted to learn how to decorate desserts for a very long time because my idea of frosting a cookie is shmearing a glob of frosting on a cookie. The first class we learned about the right tools to use, how to make the proper frosting, how to bake cakes the correct way, and how to frost with perfect form. I would like to think that I’m the newest Sylvia Weinstock, but only time will tell
